John Cahill MD

Dr. Cahill is the Medical Director for STEP. He works with Dr. Pollard, Clinical Director, to oversee clinical services, particularly in regards to physical health and wellness, medications and biological treatments, and substance use. He completed medical school at Nottingham, UK and his residency at Yale, followed by an advanced clinical research fellowship in psychosis.

Dr. Cahill has published papers and presented internationally in the field. He is the recipient of a National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD) Young Investigator Grant to continue work studying the effects of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC, the principal component of cannabis).

With a particular interest in the judicious, person-centered, and empowered use of medications, he teaches Yale psychiatry residents the “when and how” of prescribing (and not prescribing). As a musician and producer, he appreciates the value of personal expression and creativity. He serves on the committee for Psychiatry and the Arts at the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry (GAP).
